Inspiration Destination: The Metropolitan Museum

We all need some inspiration every once in a while, and nothing cures a dry spell better than an Inspiration Destination. For many people it can be a walk through a park, a visit to the beach, or even a walk downtown. But nothing inspires design more than…well, more design, and there’s no other place that houses some of the best examples of design and art than The Metropolitan Museum in New York City.

The Met is one the largest museums, with a collection that spans 5,000 years of art and design. With an extensive collection that ranges from prehistory to the present and from every part of the world, it has been visited by millions since 1870. Wander through its vast halls and rooms that make up its two million square foot building and get inspired by the art, sculpture, and decorative arts of long ago and today.

My recent trip to New York included a day at the museum, as it always does. It never ceases to amaze me how I can always discover something new every time I visit. Besides taking in the ambiance, I concentrate (as I do with everything), on details. Details that come in the form of patterns, color combinations, shapes, and textures that make up each exhibit. It’s not the actual exhibit that inspires me, but the choices the artist made at the time he or she worked on it. I look at the choices of materials, color, size, and graphic impact that I can incorporate in my own work. My tool for collecting this gold mine of design inspiration is my camera. If I’m working on a project that I just can't seem to get excited about , I will go with the specific reason of finding some design solutions. Otherwise, it's just an inspiration safari, on the hunt for details.

Here’s what my camera captured on my last trip. Enjoy this video sketchbook of inspiration and always support your local museum.
